Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman, the crafty sisters behind the DIY blog, A Beautiful Mess, published a photography idea book that provides an abundance of visual inspiration and DIY projects for any occasion. If you are brainstorming what to photograph for your social media campaign or want to add flair to your personal photography, this book is a must-read!
Just from skimming through the book at the store, I became obsessed. Photos featured in the book are eye-catching, hip and unique. The best part is that they can be recreated by pro photographers and social media snappers of all skill levels! Each tutorial and project can be done with a smartphone, point-and-shoot camera or DSLR. Some tutorials include taking photos in low light, using everyday items as light reflectors, making your own props–even how to take creative selfies.
The book’s craftiness goes beyond the camera too! A whole chapter is dedicated to creations you can make with your photos including business cards, decorations, and party favors. Maybe the tutorials for photo-transfer candles, invitations, and gift tags could be repurposed and serve as the inspiration for your next press kit or media event!
A Beautiful Mess also has online tutorials and a smartphone photo editing app (which you can find on the iTunes App Store and Google Play) for more photo fun!
This book is highly recommended specially if you are unsure of what to shoot or don’t think your current project is visually appealing. Elsie and Emma designed the book to help capture everyday life and the prompts create beautiful images out of the things we often don’t pay attention to.
As I say, inspiration is everywhere!
Here are some of the photos I took inspired by their photo prompts and challenges!
